Gopal Khanal, Chairperson of Nepal Mega College, brings over fifteen years of distinguished leadership in Nepal's education sector, complemented by extensive engagement with publication, industry-commerce associations, and banking sectors. Under his strategic guidance, Nepal Mega College has emerged as a respected educational institution committed to delivering quality education within NEB curriculum frameworks while nurturing diverse student aspirations. The college's main motto emphasizes student-centric education that recognizes individual capabilities, dreams, and learning styles—understanding that every student possesses unique potential whether oriented toward academics, sports, or creative pursuits. Khanal's holistic philosophy prioritizes meaningful counseling, family engagement, and aligning educational pathways with students' genuine aspirations and career goals for sustained lifelong success.
CR: What should students consider when selecting a college for Plus Two studies?
GK: Overall, education must operate within curriculum frameworks—we teach and students learn within NEB's curriculum structure. Therefore, I want to emphasize that when students choose colleges, the major focus should be on assessing how much they can benefit from that college and whether it suits them personally. By examining one or two historical aspects of any institution, students can determine whether that college fits their needs. Location-based suitability isn't always essential—what matters more is alignment between institutional offerings and student aspirations. Each student must conduct genuine self-assessment regarding their goals before making this important decision.
CR: Among infrastructure, teaching faculty, and extracurricular activities, which deserves greatest priority?
GK: Infrastructure must be appropriate and suitable for educational delivery. Faculty quality is undoubtedly major, but sometimes extracurricular activities also become crucial. Looking at recent SEE results, Bagmati Province achieved the best overall results among all provinces. Therefore, faculty quality also depends on student aspirations. If a student aspires to become an entrepreneur, they need to examine specific faculty strengths differently. However, not all hundred percent of students should choose based solely on faculty considerations. Some students aren't necessarily A-grade academically but show genuine interest in studying, sports, or other activities. Understanding each student's emotions and inclinations is essential—every student possesses distinct potential requiring different institutional support.
CR: What should students carefully consider before subject selection?
GK: First, we ask students what they want to become. From this starting point, we begin our counseling. Some students say they want to become doctors, others engineers, bankers, or lawyers—we must conduct counseling accordingly. Initially, family preferences usually dominate most students' choices. However, after one or two months, some students approach us saying, "Sir, I want to change. I want to switch to management." Hotel management, for example, contains different subjects within management stream. Therefore, we must understand students' genuine desires. At our college, we provide opportunities to switch streams within one month of joining if students realize their initial choice doesn't match their aspirations.
CR: How important is counseling in this process?
GK: Counseling is absolutely essential. Students must communicate clearly with their teachers about what they want to become and what subjects they should study. Parents and senior siblings should also be consulted. When students understand their path with clarity, they don't suffer or face unnecessary difficulties. If their pursuits differ from their genuine aspirations, future success becomes uncertain. Think of it this way: if you're traveling to Banepa, you shouldn't head toward Thankot in the opposite direction. We try our best to ensure students don't take wrong paths. While I cannot personally counsel every student across all colleges, we conduct comprehensive counseling for all our students to align their educational paths with their authentic aspirations.
CR: How should students assess their capability for chosen subjects?
GK: This is an excellent question because student capability is reflected through their results. Whether a student can handle science studies depends on multiple factors. Science is a subject area, but the major consideration is the goal—wanting to become a doctor or engineer means choosing science as a pathway. After completing science, students can study anything further; that pathway opens up. Even academically weaker students from remote schools can pass science with adequate support, but without clear goals, they may not become successful students. Therefore, it's better to align subject choices with capabilities and aspirations through proper guidance and realistic self-assessment.
CR: How important is family and social environment in student success?
GK: Multiple factors influence student success—the social circle, teachers, family environment, and community all play crucial roles. Parents have enormous influence. We get only six to seven hours daily; the rest of time students spend with family and community. Therefore, while we work hard and counsel intensively to help students achieve their goals, family and social support remain equally essential. The student's circle significantly impacts their success trajectory. Our institution's track record demonstrates that when families, schools, and students work together harmoniously, exceptional outcomes consistently follow throughout the educational journey.
CR: Any final message for prospective students and parents?
GK: I want to advise all students to visit Mega College once. Come see our new facilities, evaluate our past and present accomplishments, and focus on understanding what we offer. Beyond saying we have everything—all minimum requirements, physical infrastructure, and necessary facilities are available. However, I genuinely request students to clearly identify what subjects they want to study and choose accordingly. The path you want to take, the destination you want to reach—make those choices correctly. I also strongly recommend against going abroad immediately after Plus Two. At minimum, complete your Bachelor's degree before pursuing international opportunities. This approach provides stronger foundation, better career prospects, and more mature decision-making capabilities. Nepal Mega College stands ready to support students throughout their educational journey, providing quality education that prepares them for both national achievements and international opportunities when they're truly ready to pursue them with confidence and competence.
