BernHardt Builds Competent, Ethical, and Future-Ready Graduates

What began in 2060 B.S. with only twenty-six students has evolved into one of Nepal's distinguished institutions of higher education. Affiliated with Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu BernHardt College has built its reputation on academic excellence, quality assurance, technological innovation, research, and career-oriented education. As the first private college under Tribhuvan University to receive Quality Assurance and Accreditation (QAA) certification from the University Grants Commission, the institution continues to raise the benchmark for quality higher education in Nepal. In this exclusive interview with College Readers, Sahadev Sigdel, Founder and College Chief of Kathmandu BernHardt College, reflects on the college's remarkable journey, its commitment to research-driven learning, industry collaboration, digital transformation, student leadership, and graduate employability. He shares his vision of higher education as a transformative process that equips students not only with academic qualifications but also with professional competence, ethical values, and the confidence to succeed in an increasingly competitive global environment.

College Readers: Kathmandu BernHardt College has established a distinctive identity in Nepal's higher education landscape. In your opinion, what differentiates BernHardt from other colleges?

Sahadev Sigdel:
Our greatest strength is our commitment to providing an education that combines academic excellence with practical relevance. We believe higher education should prepare students not only to graduate successfully but also to thrive professionally and contribute meaningfully to society.

Technology is central to this philosophy. Every student has access to an individual computer during laboratory sessions, ensuring that financial limitations never become barriers to learning. We also believe digital literacy is indispensable across disciplines. Whether students study Business, Social Work, or Information Technology, technological competence is essential. Accordingly, we integrate IT knowledge throughout our programmes to prepare graduates for the modern workplace.

Equally important is our inclusive learning environment. Our classrooms, laboratories, sports facilities, lifts, and ramps ensure accessibility for all students, including those with physical disabilities. We also provide academic books, laboratory facilities, and library services without additional charges because we regard them as essential components of quality education. Ultimately, our goal is to produce graduates who possess professional competence, confidence, and ethical values rather than academic certificates alone.

College Readers: BernHardt is widely recognised for its achievements in quality assurance. What does quality assurance mean to your institution?

Sahadev Sigdel: Receiving Quality Assurance and Accreditation (QAA) from the University Grants Commission as the first private college affiliated with Tribhuvan University was an important milestone. However, we have always regarded accreditation as the foundation for continuous improvement rather than the final destination.

Quality assurance is embedded throughout our institution. It encompasses teaching, curriculum enhancement, research, faculty development, student services, infrastructure, governance, leadership, and graduate employability. We continuously review these areas to ensure our academic practices remain relevant and responsive to evolving educational and professional needs.

We are now progressing through the second cycle of quality assurance because excellence requires continual reflection and innovation. Ultimately, the true measure of quality lies in the achievements of our graduates as competent professionals, responsible citizens, and lifelong learners.

College Readers: Research has become an essential indicator of academic excellence. How does BernHardt promote research among faculty members and students?

Sahadev Sigdel: Research is the intellectual foundation of a reputable higher education institution. At BernHardt, faculty members are evaluated not only on teaching but also on their scholarly contributions. To strengthen research culture, we have established a dedicated Research Management Cell and publish an annual peer-reviewed journal with DOI registration. We also encourage students to engage in research projects and academic writing from an early stage, fostering analytical thinking and evidence-based problem-solving.

Kathmandu BernHardt College focuses on quality assurance, IT-integrated learning, research culture and inclusive infrastructure to produce competent, ethical and future-ready graduates.

College Readers: Beyond classroom teaching, how does the college promote leadership and holistic student development?

Sahadev Sigdel: Education should shape character as much as intellect. While academic achievement is important, leadership, communication, teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving are equally essential for success in contemporary society.

Our student clubs, including the BernHardt IT Club and BernHardt Event Club, provide opportunities to organise seminars, workshops, innovation projects, and cultural programmes. Beginning this fiscal year, students will also publish a college magazine featuring research articles, creative writing, and reports on campus activities. Such initiatives foster leadership, confidence, and intellectual expression. We believe leadership is developed through responsibility, collaboration, and active participation rather than classroom instruction alone.

College Readers: Over the past two decades, Kathmandu BernHardt College has produced thousands of graduates. How do you evaluate their achievements and contributions?

Sahadev Sigdel: The success of an educational institution is ultimately reflected in the achievements of its graduates. Over nearly two decades, BernHardt has produced around 10,000 graduates serving in government agencies, Nepal Rastra Bank, the banking and financial sector, the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, information technology companies, business enterprises, non-governmental organisations, and international institutions.

Many alumni have also pursued higher education and professional careers in countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, and Germany. Equally important are graduates who contribute to their communities, establish enterprises, and uphold ethical values. Their accomplishments reaffirm our belief that education should prepare responsible citizens as well as successful professionals.

College Readers: BernHardt is recognised for connecting academic learning with employment. How does the college bridge the gap between education and the labour market?

Sahadev Sigdel: We believe learning and earning should progress together. Through partnerships with IT companies, corporate organisations, financial institutions, and business houses, students gain internships, workplace exposure, and employment opportunities while completing their degrees.

Our Feedback and Placement Committee actively coordinates internships and employer engagement. More than 95 per cent of Information Technology students secure internships or employment, while many students in Business Studies and Business Management receive job offers before graduation. Our objective is not merely to facilitate initial employment but to equip graduates with the professional competence, adaptability, and work ethic required for long-term career success.

College Readers: Does this mean unemployment is relatively uncommon among BernHardt graduates?

Sahadev Sigdel: Graduates who actively engage with the academic and professional opportunities available at BernHardt rarely remain unemployed for long. We support students through practical learning, career guidance, and professional exposure across all programmes. Bachelor of Social Work students begin field engagement from their first year, while Business, Management, and IT students participate in internships, workshops, and industry-oriented training.

At the same time, we emphasise academic discipline, including the requirement of at least 80 per cent attendance. Sustainable career success depends upon balancing practical experience with a strong academic foundation.

College Readers: BernHardt has earned a strong reputation in Information Technology education. What qualities should prospective IT students possess?

Sahadev Sigdel: Many students assume they need advanced technical knowledge before studying Information Technology, but I disagree. Students come to college to learn, and it is our responsibility to provide the knowledge, guidance, and opportunities that enable them to develop professionally from the outset.

Beyond the curriculum prescribed by Tribhuvan University, BernHardt offers supplementary non-credit courses, specialised workshops, practical training, and extended laboratory sessions in areas such as Python, Java, Web Development, Android Application Development, and other emerging technologies. These initiatives ensure that graduates acquire industry-relevant competencies alongside theoretical knowledge.

Above all, the most important quality is a genuine willingness to learn. Curiosity, perseverance, discipline, and dedication are far more valuable than prior technical expertise. Technical and professional skills can be taught, but a positive attitude towards learning remains the foundation of lasting success.

The college strongly connects education with employability through industry partnerships, internships, placement support and practical training, with more than 95 percent of IT students securing internships or employment.

College Readers: Finally, what message would you like to convey to students and parents considering Kathmandu BernHardt College?

Sahadev Sigdel: Selecting a college is one of the most significant decisions in a student's life. I encourage students and parents to make this decision carefully and objectively rather than relying solely on advertisements or hearsay.

Visit the institution, observe its classrooms, laboratories, library, and overall learning environment, and interact with teachers, administrators, and current students. Assess whether the institution genuinely delivers the quality education, academic support, and practical learning opportunities it promises. At Kathmandu BernHardt College, we welcome such scrutiny because we have complete confidence in what we offer.

For us, education extends far beyond awarding university degrees. Our mission is to develop confident, competent, ethical, and socially responsible graduates who are prepared to excel in higher education, professional careers, and public life. BernHardt is not merely an academic institution but a learning community committed to nurturing potential, inspiring innovation, and shaping future leaders. We warmly invite students and parents to visit our campus, experience our educational environment firsthand, and make an informed decision about their future.
