US Resumes Student Visa Processing with Stricter Social Media Screening

In a significant update impacting international students, the US State Department has officially resumed processing Student and Exchange Visitor Visas—including F (Academic), M (Vocational), and J (Exchange) categories—after a suspension that started on May 27, 2025.

The resumption introduces a major policy change: mandatory enhanced social media screening for all applicants. As per a State Department directive dated June 18, 2025, all US consulates worldwide have been instructed to restart visa interviews while enforcing stringent digital background checks.

What’s New in the Screening Process?

Visa officers will now scrutinize not only applicants’ social media profiles but their entire digital footprint—including blogs, publications, and online affiliations. The screening aims to identify:

  • Hostility toward US citizens, culture, government, institutions, or foundational principles
  • Support for or advocacy of foreign terrorism or antisemitic violence
  • Political activism likely to continue on US soil, especially if linked to unlawful acts

Applicants must keep their social media accounts—Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and others—public during the visa process. Officers will capture screenshots of any concerning content for official records. This applies to both first-time and returning visa applicants.

Impact on International Students and US Institutions

The enhanced screening is expected to increase scrutiny and may slow visa processing, especially during peak months from May to August, when around 70% of US student visas are issued. Although interviews will continue, consulates may conduct fewer interviews due to increased resource demands.

Priority scheduling will be given to J-1 exchange visitors and applicants enrolling in institutions with less than 15% foreign student populations, aligning with broader immigration policies under the current administration.

What This Means for Prospective Students

For students from key source countries like India, China, Mexico, and the Philippines—where the US remains a top study destination—this change comes at a critical time, just as academic sessions approach. Securing timely visa approvals and finalizing travel plans will require extra attention to digital conduct and transparency.

While the resumption of visa processing is a positive step, the new mandatory social media screening adds a vital layer of complexity to applications. International students should prepare carefully, ensuring their online presence is appropriate and compliant.
