Thailand Revisited After Sixteen Years: A Journey of Learning for Nepal

By Biranji Gautam

Sixteen years ago, I visited Thailand with curiosity, excitement, and admiration. In 2026, when I received the opportunity to visit again, I carried not only memories but also a deeper desire to observe, compare, and learn. The Thailand I saw after sixteen years was not merely a changed country; it was a nation that had moved forward with vision, discipline, and commitment.

The first thing that impressed me was the rapid development of physical infrastructure. Roads, airports, public facilities, hotels, educational institutions, and tourism services appeared well-planned and people-friendly. Everything seemed designed to make visitors feel comfortable, safe, and respected. Thailand has understood that tourism is not only about beautiful places; it is about systems, services, education, hospitality, and trust.

During my visit, I had the privilege of observing Bangkok University International and Dusit Thani College. These institutions clearly showed how seriously Thailand has taken sustainable tourism development. Both government and private sectors have invested in tourism-related universities and colleges. What impressed me most was that even a five-star hotel has established a college, creating an excellent example of the relationship between academia and industry. Students are not limited to books; they are connected with real practice, professional culture, and service excellence.

I also felt a remarkable social transformation. The children I saw sixteen years ago have now grown into the Gen Z group, yet they are beautifully following the footsteps of Gen X in hospitality, discipline, and respect. They treat tourists almost like gods. A simple “Sawatdee” and a warm smile can be felt everywhere. Whether a visitor purchases goods or services or not, the attitude remains polite and welcoming. This culture of service is one of Thailand’s greatest strengths.

Walking alone does not create discomfort. People from different parts of the world seem to live, eat, travel, and enjoy freely. Payments are convenient through cash or credit cards. At the airport itself, SIM cards are easily available, and internet service is excellent. Such small but important facilities make a big difference in the tourist experience.

Another inspiring practice is the professionalism in massage services. For foot massage and full body massage, universities and colleges have introduced academic and non-academic courses of at least two years. This proves that Thailand values skills, training, and dignity of work. The more tourists arrive, the happier people become, and everyone seems ready to help.

As a Nepali, I returned with many reflections. Nepal has immense natural beauty, culture, mountains, rivers, heritage, and hospitality. Tourism can become our country’s biggest industry, but we need to believe more in work than in words. Sadly, some of our existing five-star hotels have turned into ruins, many others are struggling, and several are still run only in a family style. The new generation often shows little interest in continuing them. Our traditional trekking routes have also been damaged in the name of development.

Thailand taught me that tourism development requires responsibility from everyone. If Nepal can learn from such practices, our economic, educational, social, and cultural development can be strengthened. Tourism is not only an industry; it is the living identity of a nation.
