IB Course Gives Frameworks for Conceptual Understanding and Life-Changing Skills

In progressive approach, a teacher is not at the center; rather, students come to the limelight. In other words, students decide how they are going to learn in the classroom. In fact, progressive education enables learners to learn about the law of physics, team building, personal and social etiquette while playing outdoor games.

Himalayan WhiteHouse School is an international standard school of PYP and MYP Curriculum framework that empowers students and help them develop knowledge, conceptual understanding, skills and the attributes of the IB learner profile.

Mangolika Chakraborty is the Curriculum Director and Vice Principal at Himalayan WhiteHouse School. She has shared her view on progressive education with College Readers. Excerpts:

You are following IB-International Baccalaureate program in your school. How do we understand IB?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is an internationally recognized educational program that is designed to provide a challenging and rigorous academic experience to students. IB is a philosophy of education that encourages students to become life-long learners and active, compassionate participants in a global society. It emphasizes critical thinking, inquiry-based learning and a holistic approach to education that nurtures the physical, social, and emotional development of students. The IB curriculum is designed to develop students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes, and prepares them for higher education and the challenges of the modern world.

What specific features can students learn from IB Program?

Some specific features that students can learn from the IB Program are as follows:

1.         Critical thinking skills – IB Program emphasizes developing students’ ability to think critically, analyze information and solve problems.

2.         Multilingualism – Students are encouraged to learn at least two languages in the IB Program. This develops their communication skills and understanding of other cultures.

3.         Global citizenship – The program aims at creating aware, and responsible global citizens to mobilize for positive social action.

4.         Research and communication – Through the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, students learn to conduct independent research and present their ideas with clarity and coherence.

5.         Independent learning – IB program promotes self-directed, inquiry-based learning that empowers students to take charge of their own learning.

6.         Holistic education – IB program offers a balanced education that emphasizes both academic and personal growth.

7.         A broader perspective – IB students learn about different cultures, religions, and viewpoints which helps develop their understanding and appreciation of different perspectives.

8.         Time management – IB program demands a high level of time management for project deadlines, exams, and other activities as well, hence students learn to prioritize and manage their time effectively.

Education should incorporate knowledge with skill, culture, technology, and innovation. To what extent have you implemented such attributes in your institution?

Some examples of how these attributes can be incorporated into an educational institution are:

Knowledge: Education should provide students with a solid foundation of knowledge of various subjects that are relevant to their future career paths. This can be achieved by designing a curriculum that covers a range of subjects, including math, science, humanities, social sciences, and arts.

Skills: Education should also equip students with the necessary skills to succeed in their future careers. These skills can include critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and adaptability. To incorporate these skills, institutions can adopt project-based learning, group work, and experiential learning.

Culture: Education should foster a positive culture that encourages diversity, inclusivity, and a sense of community. Institutions can create a welcoming environment by promoting cultural exchange programs, hosting events that celebrate diversity, creating mentorship programs, and establishing support systems for students from underrepresented groups.

Technology: Education should incorporate technology to enhance the learning experience and prepare students for the technological advances in their respective industries. Institutions can leverage various educational technologies, such as learning management systems, cloud-based resources, virtual and augmented reality tools, and online collaboration platforms.

Innovation: Finally, education should promote innovation by encouraging students to think outside the box and take risks. Institutions can foster innovation by offering entrepreneurship programs, incubators, and maker spaces. They can also encourage professors to conduct research in cutting-edge fields and partner with industry leaders to bring new ideas into the classroom.
