Quality Human Resources & Physical Infrastructures Propel U-TEC Higher

United Technical College, a well-established college away from the capital Kathmandu, particularly in the field of Engineering and Technical education, has been running undergraduate engineering programs in Civil, Electrical and Electronics, and Computer and MSc in Construction Management. Prof. Dr. Keshab Datt Awasthi, Principal of U-TEC shares his views on strengthening the applied programs and enhancing its saleability in the market. Excerpts:

An acute scarcity of qualified and professional human resources to teach in BE engineering has been often felt in the swaths of Chitwan, how have you managed it to run the Master’s degree programs?

We have managed human resource in two ways: first, by upgrading and strengthening our own permanent faculty; and another, by collaborating with Pokhara University (PU) and Tribhuvan University (TU). We collaborate with the experts of TU in Social Sciences and Management related subjects. Similarly, we manage technical human resource as the visiting professors from Pokhara University. Our prime concern is to focus on research and publication. So, we upgrade our faculties through their involvement in research and publication, too.

United Technical College offers BE Civil, BE electrical and Electronics, BE Computer and MSc Construction Management programs of Pokhara University. Other colleges of the locality have been offering the same programs, too. What distinct attributes lure students to United Technical College?

The first reason; we have been offering Master’s degree programs along with Bachelor degree program. So, here is guarantee of delivery of high quality education by the experts. Second; we have provided students with sufficient physical infrastructure including well equipped lab and well stocked library. Third; the college has maintained proper academic environment by managing qualified faculty and fourth; the management team is visionary with strong bond of team spirit. Fifth; we focus equally on both transformations of knowledge and skill and apply the blended model in teaching learning activities.

We have given individual care and focused on practicality as well as exploring individual hidden talent.   We believe that every student is unique and has his or her own unique talents. As an educator, it’s our responsibility to open their minds, nurture their talents and help them reach their peak of excellence. Students at our college learn to become skilled and confident communicators. Provision of guest lecturer for giving knowledge in depth is another beauty of our college. We groom them well and make them experienced with direct exposure to the real market and equip them with the skills to work professionally global in global market. The college has abundant access to technological, advanced physical and academic facilities required to support daily curricula as well as extra-curricular activities. Hence, the students should study in our college to enrich their career.

It is heard that there is high dropout rate in engineering education. In your analysis, what are the reasons behind this?

I am not in the side of blaming to any component. Every individual is equally responsible behind it. In my analysis, the major reason behind the high dropout rate is misuse of latest technology such as face book, twitter, tik- tok and so on. Most of the students join in engineering education without preparation and strong determination. Similarly, due to the lack of proper guardianship and residential system, most of the students drop out their study untimely.
