Barun Panthi, Program Director at Nepal Mega College, Babarmahal, Kathmandu is a well-known Biologist and academician. He has more than one decade-long involvement in ten-plus-two education. Mr. Panthi has shared his view on the current trend of ten-plus-two education and the things to be amended in the education system in Nepal. Excerpts:

Your more than one-decade long experience of ten-plus-two education is worthy of appreciation. Based on your experience, how do you analyze the existing ten-plus-two education in Nepal?

Comparing our existing educational curriculums with that of global context, the theoretical parts escalating and accelerating; however, practical and project-based education is totally ignored. The annual evaluation system should be modified, and equal focus should be given to the activity-based education. Nevertheless, we are hopeful that progressive education will be implemented in the future although it seems better than the previous practice.

How do you analyze the functions of the current curricula in Nepal? Do you think the present curriculums are adequate for the preparation of globally employable human resources?

The present curriculum is oriented towards some progressive assessment, but it’s not sufficient. Similarly, we lack pre-requisites for social and economic transformation, such as competent and trained human resources to fulfill the objectives of the existing curriculums.

Since most colleges conduct identical cocurricular and extra-curricular activities, what distinctive features of your college can draw the attention of career hopefuls?

Nepal Mega College is one of the reputed colleges in Kathmandu valley, which is also famous for its range of course choices. The college has given equal focus on both cocurricular and extra-curricular activities as part of study. Our motive is to impart holistic education and produce adroit, confident and competitive graduates who can be employed in the global market. So, we equally give emphasis on games, sports and co-curricular activities, such as declamations, elocution and other creative activities. Moreover, with the motive of ensuring students’ exposure, we have managed a virtual lab tour to connect our students with foreign university graduands. Similarly, as we are committed to developing international standard competency in our students, we have provided non-credit courses of related subjects.

Nepal Mega College has a distinctive name and acclamation in the arena of education. Could you please share with us the achievements of your college graduates?

Nepal Mega College was established in 2060 BS with the aim and mission of imparting quality education that befits the 21st century. The college has gained a significant achievement in academic excellence. Our graduates have proven outstanding performance in their academic and professional life. Many of them have been awarded gold medals by TU and other universities and many graduates have topped in medical and engineering programs.

In spite of thorough counseling for students, they are still in doubt of confirming their enrollment in a right college for higher studies. In your view, what things are to be considered by the SEE graduates for their further education?

The students have to be judicious of choosing a right subject and a right college so that they would not waste time in hindsight in the future. The students should choose the subject based on their interest and scope of the subject. Similarly, while choosing a right college, students should focus on three things: accessibility, academic excellence, and fee structure of the college. Besides, they should analyze the condition of academic environment, results of graduates, available faculty of teachers, physical infrastructure etc. that will help in crystallizing their aim.

What suggestions would you like to convey to the SEE graduates as the Director of Nepal Mega College?

Nepal Mega College has retained a long legacy as the center of academic excellence. It is a well-recognized college in terms of physical infrastructure, sustainability and proven academic excellence. We equally focus on both cocurricular and extra-curricular activities. I, therefore, would like to request the SEE graduates to pay a visit to Nepal Mega College since we are eager to welcome you.
